Independen­ts lead way in shopping centre’s success

One year ago, Ashford Borough Council bought Park Mall for £823,489 in a bid to bring it back to life.

At the time of their bold purchase, the 31-shop centre was ailing, with a large number of vacant units and was often criticised as being “run-down”.

Now, more than half of the empty shops have been filled and footfall is up by around 7%, according to council chiefs.

Independen­t shops such as Made In Ashford and Emporia Craft and Fabric have had some success, while others have now joined them.

Recently PJ Produce has given up the fruit and veg barrow, but it can still be seen trading at the Ashford Farmers’ Market and Tenterden Markets.

Jo Wynn-Carter, Ashford council’s regenerati­on manager, said: “The past year has been really encouragin­g.

“The independen­t-led offer has enthused shoppers and it has been great to see some solid business plans come forward.

“We are doing all we can to work with businesses – not just in Park Mall, but across the town centre as a whole.”

Cllr Graham Galpin, Ashford council portfolio holder for the town centre and business, said: “While we knew it would take time for a reinvigora­ted Park Mall to evolve its offer. It is clear that the council’s hard work, and that of its proactive retailers, has already made a big difference.

“With the emphasis on quality, the independen­t businesses are creating quite a buzz in the town centre. It is pleasing that other authoritie­s have heard about our success and been to see for themselves what we are doing.”

Business owner Kate Tompsett, of Happy & Glorious, said: “The council could not have been more supportive to me since I moved into Park Mall.
