Watch out for the showers

Angling

- By Wesley Shrubsole

It would seem this summer is going to be, at best, sunshine and showers. The problem is the showers are sharp to say the least. Don’t forget your umbrella is the best advice for both salt and freshwater anglers at the moment. The trout angler is more mobile in his sport so relies on good quality clothing for protection and the lodge for refuge and a cup of tea. The junior anglers of Dungeness braved the thunderstorms to catch some nice fish from the Littlestone wall and eels, spurdog and bass to 40cm were among the bags. The latest competition at Folkestone’s Radnor Park pool saw Peter Joiner the winner with 38lb. Venue regular Mick Milton was a close second (31lb 4oz) and Les Phillips came in third (27lb 12oz). Bream, roach and carp were in the catches. Down at Princess Parade, the dogfish are feeding well over the high water and there are plenty of rays for those who know the ‘hotspots’. Catches of 10-plus fish are possible and please, if you are not going to eat them, put them back for someone else to enjoy. Cinque Ports held their final match in the evening series on the large lake at Beachborough and despite poor weather I managed to win with 10kg of carp and bream on pellet over pellet. The series winner was Lawrie Webster. The Dungeness seniors’ latest match saw Howard Relf top rod in this catchand-release league with three fish for 113cm, with John Wigston the overall leader. The ever-consistent Martyn Reid was top rod in Folkestone’s latest match with 3.500kg. Ray Coyne (2.680kg) was second and Lee Heaver (2.410kg) third. Sole, pouting and doggies were in the catches.
