Youngsters taking their chance

Ashford Town

-

Ashford Town skipper Liam Tegg is still backing his side to stay in Division 2.

He missed the 10-wicket home defeat by Bromley Common on Saturday, which keeps Town second bottom but says there’s enough in the side to avoid the drop.

Luke Reeves skippered the side in the absence of Tegg, who was one of four players attending a friend’s wedding.

Town were dismissed for only 125 and the visitors needed only 16.1 overs to complete victory.

Tegg said: “We were a young inexperienced side up against one of the most experienced in our league.

“The positives were another good display by 15-year-old Luke Perkins, while Tyron Beech who’s only 17, also did well.

“He has put in some good performances for the seconds and took his chance and will play at Old Wilsonians this weekend.”

He added: “The season is going quickly but there are seven matches left and I still think we capable of upsetting a few sides.”

“It’s a case of going back to basics and start enjoying our cricket again because we are worrying too much about winning.”

“There is no reason why we can’t stay up but we haven’t played our best cricket.”

The trip to Wilsonians won’t be easy, following their surprise win at St Lawrence & Highland Court.

Tegg said: “We beat them earlier in the season but they are on a good run and have done well over the last three or four weeks.”

Ben Perkins top scored with 40 as Town 2nds (180) lost by 102 runs at High Halstow (282-3) in Division 5.
