A man’s body was discovered in a Newtown home on Monday morning.

The victim has been named locally as 38-year-old Jason Toomey, who lived in New Town Green.

Emergency crews rushed to the address at 8.38am but Mr Toomey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tributes have been paid to the “likeable bloke” who was “known for his cheeky smile”.

One friend, who asked not to be named, said: “He was well known in the area, a quiet lad who kept himself to himself but would always talk to people, just not many words.

“He was a likeable bloke and would regularly drink in The Albion pub. He was known for his cheeky smile.”

Police and paramedics attended after reports “concerning the welfare of a man”.

A police spokesman said: “Officers and ambulance crews attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Next of kin have been informed.

“We are not treating the death as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.”

An ambulance spokesman also confirmed paramedics were called to the private address.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “There were at least 15 emergency vehicles parked near the post office, in both car parks, including police and ambulance – more police than I have ever seen in my life.

“May the poor man rest in peace.”

On the day his body was found, Mr Toomey had been due appear in court for a trial on assault, criminal damage and stalking - charges he denied.
