Angling

- By Wesley Shrubsole

It is great to see salt and freshwater competitions arranged for our junior anglers now they are on summer holidays. Deal Angling Club 1919 have a junior pier competition on Sunday, August 14 and any junior is welcome. The cost is just £1 and all anglers will get a prize. For more information, call Pat on 01304 361248. Dover’s Nathan Elliot showed the Dungeness Angling Club members that local knowledge is tops by winning their competition at Samphire Hoe. He had a total catch length of 475cm, which included doggies, wrasse and pouting. The Fountain Club were on home ground for their latest competition behind Sandgate Castle. Adam Howard found the fish feeding with a winning weight of 4.405kg, Geoff Swinyard was second (2.282kg) and Del King (1.145kg) was third. The club’s next match is at Samphire Hoe on Saturday. On the freshwater front, Radnor Park keeps producing some amazing competition results. The Sunday match was won by Lyminge matchman Pete Joiner with a mixed bag for 67lb 12oz. Sandwich Bay is producing some nice bass to 4lb to black lugworm baits. Simon Newman took full advantage of the settled weather to go off a local mark, catching a stunning blonde ray of 24lb. After admiring his catch, it was slipped back into the water to fight another day. Hinckley triumphs Trevor Hinckley won Ashford Angling Society’s Gordon Thomsett Memorial Trophy at Surrenden. He banked 15lb 10oz of skimmers and roach with the odd perch, finishing ahead of runner-up Trevor Breedon (14lb 2oz), with Bill Short third (13lb 12oz). The hot conditions made fishing patchy in this silvers match, meaning most anglers threw back more than they weighed in. The society are in action again on Sunday when they meet Cranbrook AS in an inter-club match at Saw Lodge Farm Lake in Frittenden. Surrenden will be closed the day before due to a Junior Informer match.
