Weller’s efforts prove in vain

Tenterden

-

Tenterden slipped to a third successive Premier Division defeat with a four-wicket defeat at home to Blackheath on Saturday.

Sam Weller hit a half century, and then took two wickets in successive balls, with the visitors still needing 34 to win before they eventually got home on 221-6 with 29 balls remaining.

The result drops Tevis Knight’s men to sixth but they have a 40-point cushion on second bottom Bromley.

Tom Richards made the first breakthrough for the hosts, having A Crawford lbw b Ahmed ..................34 C Vernon c Ahmed b Paul..................24 B Price st Kerridge b Hands ..............11 B Daking b Willetts ...........................17 B Popli c Willetts b Sikandar .............37 T Knight Jnr c Kerridge b Paul...........10 S Weller c Lee b Ahmed ....................50 A Neale run out .................................10 T Richards run out ..............................1 J Bristow-Diamond not out ...............12 T Curteis not out .................................1 Extras ...............................................13 Jahid Ahmed stumped by Ben Price for seven with the score 22, before Blackheath skipper George Wells (53) and Tanweer Sikander (55) took their side past the 100 mark.

Ben Daking ran out Sikander to end their stand of 82, before Weller held a fine catch to send back Richard Fleming (1) off Ali Neale, third out at 114.

Tim Curteis trapped Wells leg before wicket before Dipayan Paul (42) and Mehdi Abbas (42 not out) M Ahmed b Rand ................................3 J Yandell c Jones b Parker ..................3 S Ujoodia c J Drewe b Collingwood ...39 Jr Hussain not out.............................36 B Rose c Russell b Sparks ................18 G Rasool not out ...............................25 Extras .................................................5 S Balage Don c Reeves b Cooper ......10 S Beckett c&b Beech ..........................4 D Ellicott-White not out .......................4 D Forbes b Perkins..............................1 Extras ...............................................15 K Mcarthur b Diedrick .......................60 G Juneja c&b Diedrick ........................4 J McGroarty c Colbran b Pack ...........14 M Barnes c Kennett b Cook ...............76 O Holmes not out ..............................57 T Seal b Diedrick ..............................17 R Marsh b Kennett ..............................1 B Singh not out ...................................9 Extras ...............................................19 dug in taking the score to 187, before Weller struck removing Paul and ex-Kent man Warren Lee.

Blackheath survived the hat-trick ball but it proved too little, too late to alter the outcome.

Earlier, Andrew Crawford and Chris Vernon shared an opening stand of 56 for Tenterden before the latter went for 24.

Price was promoted to No.3 in the order before he and Crawford (34) fell in the space of two runs.

Daking went for 17 and Knight (10) fell to the first ball following the drinks break.

Weller batted well, either side of losing Bharat Popli for 37.

Richards was run out with the total 190, Weller completing a valuable 50, before being dismissed with eight balls remaining.

Jamie Bristow-Diamond (12 not out) added runs at the end, as Tenterden finished on 220-9.

Harrison Wells hit 45 as Tenterden 2nds (126) saw their unbeaten run ended with a six-wicket defeat in the reverse fixture between the top two Division 1 rivals at Rectory Field.

The home side lost two early wickets in their reply before reaching 127-6 in the 48th over.

Tenterden still head the table by 24 points.

The club host MCC today (Thursday, 11.30am) as the club continue their cricket week.

Exiles are the opponents tomorrow (Friday) with C Linton’s XI the visitors on Sunday.
