Police chase ends in big smash
Emergency services cut three people from vehicles following collision at junction
Police arrested a teenage driver on suspicion of dangerous driving following a high-speed chase which ended in a crash on a busy road.
The driver of a silver MG ZR failed to stop when asked to do so by officers in Bybrook Road at 5.44pm on Saturday. After a short pursuit, he crashed the vehicle into a BMW at the junction of Nettlefield and Faversham Road in Kennington at 5.48pm.
Eyewitness Paul Baxter said he was walking with his partner and their dog to the nearby Co-op store when they saw the MG speeding out of Nettlefield pursued by police.
Mr Baxter helped an elderly man to get out of the BMW, with a woman in the car “in distress and in need of medical attention”.
Fire crews had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to free her from the BMW, and also used cutting equipment to release two men in the MG.
Police say the 18-year-old man needed hospital treatment for an injury to his arm. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, and has been bailed until Monday, August 22, pending further inquiries.
A police spokesman said the police car did not make contact with either the speeding MG or the BMW, but the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, as per the force’s policy.
Officers investigating the crash want to talk to anyone who might have seen the cars on the road prior to the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call 01622 798538 and quote reference JW/150/16.
