Community cafe will help fund local people

-

A community cafe has opened in Kingsnorth.

Based at t he recreation ground’s pavilion, the cafe is the brainchild of residents Brian Battye and Trevor Measday.

Mr Battye said: “Two years ago parish clerk Len Bunn made a comment that the parish council should maybe sort out a community cafe at some stage.

“Trevor and I used to meet once a month for a coffee and a slice of cake and we talked about this suggestion and decided to give it a go.”

With financial and moral support from Kingsnorth Parish Council, Ashford Borough Council and Tesco the duo also put some money into the idea and the result was the creation of the community cafe.

It was officially opened last week by Ashford Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr George Koowaree and Gloria Champion having begun trading the week before.

The cafe is open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 1pm and for Sunday fun runs being held in the recreation ground and evening football training sessions.

A team of volunteers has been recruited to help Mr Battye and Mr Measday run the cafe. The venue sells hot drinks, biscuits, savouries, cakes and a variety of cold drinks.

Mr Battye said: “It’s gone very well so far and all the feedback has been very positive. It’s been created for the Kingsnorth com- munity. Whatever profits we make will go into a fund that will be used for the benefit of people living in Kingsnorth.”

Residents will be able to nominate worthy individuals to receive cash from the fund.
