Second straight home loss

-

Missed chances proved Ashford United’s downfall as old boy Sam Flisher’s late winner grabbed the points to earn new-boys Bearsted their first Southern Counties East League Premier Division win at Homelands on Tuesday night.

Flisher pounced eight minutes from time to condemn United to back-to-back home defeats for the first time in almost five years.

Player-boss Danny Lye said: “I wasn’t downbeat by the result, more the manner of it.

“Every goal we have conceded so far has been down to a mistake and nobody has scored a good one against us yet.”

He added: “We had 10 or 15 chances in the opening 20 minutes, had we scored one of them we might have gone on and won 5-0.”

Lye’s No.2 Shaun Welford might have scored six on the night but Bears’ goalkeeper Scott Andrews was in impressive form.

He denied the United top scorer three times, as well producing a top save to keep out Ryan Palmer and Ben Davisson’s firsthalf effort.

Another former United player, Andy Irvine, fired over for Bears but the second half proved an untidy affair with United having an off-night with both their touch and passing.

Indeed, the game looked to be staying goalless until Flisher’s late intervention.

He finished from inside the box after United had failed to clear a corner.

It meant Lye’s night was spoilt by the club where he started his career 20 years ago.
