Adam Fox hit the winner as Ashford men’s 1st XI claimed their first Kent/Sussex Regional 1 win of the season, beating Maidstone 1-0 at Ball Lane.
He struck midway through the first half, finishing off a neat move by converting Lewis Elgar’s accurate cross from the right, following Ben Dawson’s sideline ball.
Rain made the pitch slick in a fast end-to-end contest against gritty opponents.
Elgar went close to getting a second, shooting at the keeper with the follow-up stopped by his pads.
The second half produced several cards, with Kiagh Bridges and Elgar shown yellows together with two visiting players,
Ashford were under pressure, with Maidstone creating three close-range chances, but they managed to survive and almost added a second themselves.
A long ball in behind found Matt Reeve with Ashford in a two-against-one situation, but they were denied by the advancing keeper.
Ashford 2nds drew 1-1 at their county town counterparts in Kent Division 1.
They trailed 1-0 before Robin Miller scored in a move started by his father and skipper Kevin.
The 3rds lost 6-0 at Sevenoaks in Division 2.
The 4ths went down 5-0 at Gravesham and Wellcome in Open Premier B, Crusaders lost 6-0 in Open Division 1, and the 6ths also conceded six at home to Cobdown in Division 4.
Ashford Ladies lost 2-0 at Southend and Benfleet in East Women’s League Division 2 South East.
The 2nds drew 2-2 at home to Gillingham Anchorians in Kent 1 and the 3rds went down 3-1 at Dartford in Division 2.
