Musician ready for return

- By Aidan Barlow

An award-winning musician says he will bring a concert full of surprises when he returns to Ashford to perform tomorrow (Friday) night.

Darren Moore, 26, attended the London’s Guildhall School of Music between 2008 and 2012 and was part of the Royal Academy of Music between 2012 and 2014.

Now a freelance musician, he has joined orchestras including the London Philharmonic, as well as playing various solo recitals.

Mr Moore will be returning to play at Revelation St Mary’s in the town centre, a venue where he played concerts and sang Christmas carols in his youth.

He said: “I can’t wait to come back. It will be a very personable performance and I will be playing a range of modern and old instruments. On the night there will be some instruments that nobody has ever seen in Ashford.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I will see people who I have not seen in a long time. I’m sure the memories will come flooding back in the church where I used to go for carol concerts and to play brass.

“The concert will have pieces ranging from the 16th century right up to the modern day, and one of the composers is even coming to watch.

“The performance will take place around the church and will make great use of the space.

“There will be a few surprises, including a dramatic cowboy piece, so people can expect some tongue-in-cheek western music, too.”

He will be playing alongside trumpet players including Peter Mankarious and Daniel Walton, and pianist Thomas Dodd.

But he admits that he owes a great deal of his success to his parents John and Julie Moore, and former Norton Knatchbull School music teacher John Hall.

Mr Moore said: “I’m absolutely loving my time as a musician, I’ve got a lot of things going on and projects coming up. I’m going to a classical music festival in Lucerne in Switzerland, and to play in Germany as well.”

Mr Moore is raising money for Global’s Make Some Noise, which supports disadvantaged youngsters and their families living with disabilities, illness or lack of opportunities.

Some tickets are still available, and cost £5 for adults, £3 for students, and free for under-18s.
