Relief and pride as riders end their mountainous challenge

-

Battling 260 miles in just three days, two founding members of the Ashford Freewheelers raised a massive amount.

Gary Foreman and Richard Fagg, both from Ashford, raised £5,583.43 for Breast Cancer Now on the mammoth cycle ride from Milan to Monaco.

They left the Italian city on September 29, with 24 others from around the world.

Mr Fagg said: “The first day was surprisingly chilly but then turned surprisingly hot.

“Due to the mixed ability of the group it was a long day in the saddle. We spent around 13 hours covering 106 miles with some tough short climbs.

“But the third and final day was the one we’d all feared.

“It was only 70 miles left to Monaco but between us was the lower reaches of the Alps.”

Despite their fears, the pair made it to the finish line, tackling miles of up and downhill stretches, rain and treacherously slippy roads. Mr Fagg added: “It was hard work but a great effort.

“We want to say thanks to all our sponsors and everyone who supported us and donated.”
