Sloppy defending punished

Ashford men’s 1sts suffered their third defeat in four Kent/ Sussex Regional 1 games, losing 3-1 at home to Old Bordenians on Saturday.

They had a first-half effort disallowed, before conceding all the goals after the break, with Lewis Elgar pulling one back.

Adam Fox, Will Elgar and Ricky Johnston had all been denied by the visiting keeper from previous penalty corners before Matt Reeve’s low finish took a deflection on its way into the net. However, the umpire ruled out the effort. Fox had another great chance – left one-on-one against the keeper, who again couldn’t be beaten. In the second half, sloppy home defending was punished as OBs moved into a 2-0 lead.

The visitors then won a corner, a decision Ashford thought harsh, OBs having already had the advantage and taken a shot.

The corner came to nothing but was re-awarded after hitting a foot. The second effort went to the top of the D, the shot took a deflection from a home stick and went in. Ashford were reduced to nine men at one stage but back at full strength, had two more chances – the pass firstly going too far in front, before a deflection missed the target.

The second came when Kiagh Bridges cut out a Bordenians attack to start a good team move, Elgar dummied his shot as the keeper went down, leaving the Ashford player with a simple finish.

Ashford 2nds went down 3-0 in the reverse fixture in Kent 1, while the 3rds lost their fourth successive Kent 2 game – 2-0
