Grand designs for sports pavilion wins recognition

- By Aidan Barlow

An Ashford architecture firm beat the competition to win a European award for its new sports pavilion design.

Directline Structures built the £460,000 facility for the Langton Green Sports Association (LGSA) in Tunbridge Wells, which was opened by 1966 World Cup-winning footballer George Cohen and Football Foundation president Lord Pendry.

Managing director Duncan Murray worked on the project with Katy Barker and said their design has won the Astron Small and Smart Award 2016.

Mr Murray said: “We managed the entire project in-house from concept to completion, so we were aware of the challenges at an early stage and were able to tackle problems without delaying the project.

“We were able to show the LGSA and the FA how the scheme we were proposing offered the same provisions but in a much more efficient and attractive building that was totally designed for purpose.”

Ms Barker said the pavilion is the 10th that the firm has built, and is highly practical with features such as high ceilings for better acoustics, large glazed doors, outdoor toilets and also a kitchen which can serve people inside and outside.

Association chairman Guy Lambert said: “The whole project was finished on time and on budget. On the inside, it’s simply amazing. We couldn’t be happier.”
