Late developer Huw passes on tips
Fresh from a blistering start to his international rugby career, former Canterbury schoolboy Huw Jones has been in Kent to talk to children.
The 22-year-old, who went to Junior King’s and played for Canterbury Rugby Club as a boy, visited Spring Grove School in Wye where dad Bill is headmaster.
Edinburgh-born Huw plays centre for Scotland and shot to fame last month with two tries against Australia on his home debut at Murrayfield.
He gave a talk to Spring Grove’s pupils and then answered their questions – which included “is rugby scary?”, and “are you the Bill and Hilary Jones with their son Huw best player in your team?”
Bill said: “He actually answered the second question very well by saying that as part of a team, he and his fellow players each have a different job to do.”
“Huw was a late developer and one the lessons of his career is that with patience, perseverance and determination you can make it.
“Every player has his periods on the sidelines and Huw has shown that when you do get your chance, you’ve got to take it.”
Huw plays his club rugby for the Cape Town-based Stormers in the southern hemisphere’s Super Rugby competition.
He returns there later this month, but is likely to come back to the UK for the Six Nations Championships which Scotland begin with a game against Ireland on February 4.
