Semi-final chance goes begging
Kent County League
Kennington and New Romney both bowed out of the Kent Reliance-sponsored Intermediate Challenge Shield with quarter-final defeats.
The Ashford villagers lost 5-4 at home to Premier Division rivals Punjab United, while New Romney went down 3-2 at Borden Village.
Kennington trailed 5-0 at half-time before staging a battling but vain fightback, with goals by Tom Scorer, Dan Shearing, Ally Grigg and Jordan King.
Roy Godden and substitute Lewis Butler netted for Romney who suffered only their second defeat in all competitions this season.
Lydd Town Reserves’ poor home form continued with a sixth defeat in eight games, Scott Bouvier scoring in the 2-1 reverse against Farnborough OBG.
Rolvenden went down 3-0 at home to Hawkinge in Division 1.
Willesborough grabbed an equaliser five minutes from time to draw 4-4 at Snodland Town Reserves in Division 2.
Mark Wallis scored twice for the Ashford side, with Steve Cowell and Sam Ades adding the other two goals.
The teams were level at 2-2 and both reduced to 10 men by half-time, with Willesborough having Dion Bepe sent off for two yellow cards.
Both teams got a third, Snodland then converted a penalty to go 4-3 up and lead for the first time in the game, before the visitors’ late leveller.
Ashford FC also drew – for only the second time this season – finishing goalless at Aylesford FC.
Ashford created the better chances but were unable to beat the home keeper who was a strong candidate for man-of-thematch.
