The striker came off the bench with 21 minutes left at Homelands on Saturday to become the second substitute in the club’s history to achieve the feat, following Michael Smissen’s treble at Rochester three seasons ago.

City had targeted 31-goal fellow front-man Shaun Welford as United’s main danger but Stone eclipsed him, scoring United’s 100th goal of the season with his first, as the tie looked destined for extra-time.

City had left-back Patrick Nzuzi sent off three minutes after half-time following a second yellow card. He was booked early in the game for a foul on Ryan Palmer, who gave him a torrid time in the first half.

City fans in the crowd thought the second yellow was harsh, in a game full of competitive tackles, with referee Chris Myatt booking the United trio of Rory Hill, Stuart West and Welford, as well as City’s Alfie Nunn.

Following the dismissal, City goalkeeper Nick Shaw pushed a Ben Davisson shot over before denying Jason Goodchild.

Palmer then struck a post and Hill glanced another effort against the bar.
