Dumped bags may contain asbestos

-

A sofa, toy car and bags of what is believed to be asbestos are among some of the items that have been fly-tipped behind a retail park in Ashford.

The rubbish has been spotted dumped on Gallagher Way next to the Gallagher Retail Park, off Norman Road.

The retail park hosts Currys PC World, Pets at Home, Halfords and Harveys Bensons for Beds.

Marc Neudeck spotted about 20 large bags next to the road, which looked like they contained a type of broken corrugated asbestos.

He said: “The bags are not sealed. Some is on the road and is being crushed to powder by passing delivery lorries.

“Not only is this illegal, it’s a very real public health issue.

“I have informed the council and the Environment Agency. No action has been taken.

“There seems to be some conflict over who owns the land and is responsible for removal.”

Further along the road, more fly-tipped waste can be seen, including a toy car and a sofa.

Ashford Borough Council were contacted for comment.
