Crack of Thunder had to settle for runners-up spot in the mixed open at the Mid Surrey Draghounds meeting at Godstone on Sunday. Third behind Kent Gold Cup winner Murrayana at Charing last month, the Rose Grissell-trained mount finished five lengths behind odds-on winner Minerfortyniner. A mixture of heavy rain and hail storms made it a difficult day for spectators in the second South East event of the season with the first four winners all going to out-of-thearea connections. Trainer Nigel Padfield and jockey Jack Andrews completed a double on Excitable Island in the opening club members race and King Willie in the restricted. The maiden was full of drama as Brogeen Boy ridden by Will Hickman, who has been consistently finishing second bar a couple of falls in maiden company,

This left Fizzlestix, with Shane Roche aboard, and We’ve Got Company from Andrew Pennock’s Essex yard, the only contenders left, as all their other rivals had pulled up. Fizzlestix, who fell at Charing when leading the maiden race there, managed to negotiate the final three obstacles to finish a distance clear of his sole rival. The final race saw outsider Always A Chance pull away the run-in to finish ahead of another odds-on touch, 13-year-old Little Legend. The next local fixture is the Old Surrey and Burstow Hunt meeting at Penshurst on Sunday, March 26.
