‘it wAs very stubborn And didn’t wAnt to move out oF the roAd’

Strewth! A driver had to ask himself if he was going hopping mad after he spotted a wallaby on the other side of the road in December last year.

Steve Peters was driving on the A28 between Bethersden and Ashford at 11.30am when he saw the strange sight.

Mr Peters said: “As I was driving along, I passed Smelly Farm and on the other side of the road, happily hopping along, was a wallaby, going towards Bethersden.

“I don’t drink or take drugs, and I’m not mad, hopping or otherwise, but it was a small, brown wallaby the size of a dog.”

After this sighting readers on the Kentish Express Facebook page posted that the creature was originally believed to be from the Capralama Farm, but was now living in the wild.

Lorna Bennett posted: “My friend and I were travelling back to Ashford from Pluckley late on Saturday evening and passed a wallaby on the road coming into Great Chart at the Blue Barn end.

“At first we weren’t sure what we were seeing then realised what it was and did a doubletake. It was just hopping along by the verge. I was really concerned about it being hit by a car.”

Among others who saw a wallaby was Chelsea Greenfield, who spotted one on Saturday, November 26, last year, near Pluckley.

She said: “My partner George Lockwood thought it was a kangaroo. I was just glad I wasn’t driving fast as it was very stubborn and didn’t want to move out of the road.

“I was scared it was going to kick my car so I just remained stationery until it moved out of the road. I was so surprised. It didn’t seem real.”

Over the years there have been numerous sightings of Wallabies across Kent, as detailed in our graphic.
