Gearing up for a nutty journey on scooters

- By Laerke Christensen

Ten bikers are setting off on a four-day round trip from Ashford to Land’s End in the name of charity.

On Wednesday, April 26, Kent Nutters on Budget Scooters embark on an ambitious journey. They are riding their less-than-£250 scooters from Ashford to Land’s End avoiding motorways, a round trip of about 800 miles.

Money raised will go to the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust and the group hopes to make £1,200.

Organiser Barry Longman said the group chose the charity because of its relevance to bikers, adding: “When we do have an accident on the bikes it’s normally the air ambulance that comes out.

“Luckily I’ve never had an experience with the air ambulance but a couple of fellow riders have. We want to help as much as we can.”

Mr Longman has not taken his scooter further than 50 miles before and is excited and apprehensive about the journey: “I’m nervous. It’s going to be a long ride.”
