More yellow lines planned to help parking problems

- By Molly MilehamChappell

More double yellow lines are being considered for a busy housing estate, following years of problems with parking.

Residents in Loudon Way and Cypress Avenue, Godinton Park, Ashford, have long suffered from vehicles parking from early in the morning until late evening.

It has led to claims that the cars are connected to workers from the nearby Cobbs Wood Industrial Estate.

Lines were painted at the top of Loudon Way in 2015 to prevent the Chart Road junction becoming blocked but residents said that the parked vehicles simply moved closer to Cypress Avenue, with cars blocking the view when trying to turn out of the junction.

The new proposed changes include double yellow lines in Cypress Avenue at its junction with Loudon Way and also at various points in Loudon Way.

A council spokesman said: “Residents of Godinton Park have asked that restrictions be considered. The proposal will enable better visibility at junc- tions along with improved flow of traffic. This matter has also been considered with officers from Kent County in conjunction with the proposals to widen and improve the A28 Chart Road.

“The restrictions proposed relate to a restriction on waiting at or opposite junctions by means of double yellow lines, which reflects advice given in the Highway Code. These currently unrestricted locations should not be used for parking, regardless of whether there are lines or not. Without restrictions in place, civil enforcement by the local authority cannot be undertaken to encourage safe use of our borough’s roads for both motorists and pedestrians.

“Parking spaces will still be available but the restrictions ensure they are away from junctions. The consultation period runs until the midnight on Thursday, June 1. Thereafter, the scheme will be discussed by the joint transportation board. If supported a traffic order would be sealed by Kent County Council. This normally takes place within four to six weeks of the board’s decision. Lining and any associated signage would be then put in place.”
