Meet your new head - but only for the day!

-

What would you do if you were in charge of your school for a day?

That’s what pupils at Beaver Green Community Primary School were asked last week during their own mini head teacher election.

Pupils from Years 1 to 5 were asked to produce manifestos and a shortlist was drawn up for students to vote on.

A ballot box and polling stands were arranged for the pupils to vote for their favourite ideas, and the winning head teacher for a day was announced on Friday in a school assembly, following a vote on Thursday, the same day as the national general election.

Year 5 pupil Sesehang won the competition, with ideas including a cross-curriculum activity day and a whole school picnic, both of which will soon take place at the school.

Vicky Roberts, deputy head teacher of the school in Cuckoo Lane, said: “We thought it would be a nice idea, to teach about British values of democracy.

“We wanted the children to understand what was going on and introduced it in assemblies and classes.

“The whole voting process went really well. The pupils were so enthusiastic, keen and involved.

“It was really a brilliant thing for the school. We’re going to do it every year now.”

Sesehang enjoyed a meeting with teachers and visited other classrooms.
