BOWLS: RAIL LADIES SURVIVE SINGLES LOSS TO PROGRESS IN NATIONAL TOP CLUB COMPETITIO­N

There were mixed fortunes for Ashford Rail in two national competitio­ns.

The ladies went through to the next round of the Top Club on Monday, winning 3-1 at Lenham.

Chris Breeds lost the singles 21-16 but Anne Rutland/Linda Greenhalgh won the pairs 25-12.

Hazel Larkin, Gill Hawkes and Mo Hayes won the triples 19-16, with Ashleigh Minter, Trudy Paine, Mary Fortune and Belinda Williams, 26-14 winners in the fours. They now play either Milton Regis or Victoria Park (Deal)

The men went out of the Club 2+4s, beaten 3-2 by Canterbury.

In club matches, Rail won five out of six rinks in a 113-84 win over Lyminge on Tuesday.

Chrissy Tamburro, Clive Allen and skip Garry Breeds were the best-winning rink 27-8.

Six rinks were shared as Rail won 104-74 against Boughtonun­der-Blean. Janet Williams, Clive Allen and skip Gary Owen claimed rink honours with a 21-17 victory.

A third win saw Rail beat Kearsney 128-109, with Jim Cruickshan­k, Dick Neaves and skip Ian Larkin, the best rink performers, winning 36-9

A three rink mixed triples contest at Cheriton ended in a 60-46 defeat. Janet Williams, Callum Fraser and skip Dudley Bryant were best visiting rink (26-6). Rail staged the Kent under-25 Pairs championsh­ips on Sunday.

The host club’s Ashleigh Minter and Neve Samson lost 35-9 against Stacey Carmichael and Rosina Hall of Cheriton in the first round.

Another Cheriton pair, Leah Bamford and Anna Hall meet Olivia Moulton and Imogen Jenner of Milton Regis in the final – again at Rail – on Sunday July 1. The County Senior Fours semi-finals and finals take place on the same day.

Tenterden A lost 58-52 at Ditton A in the Weald League, with Anne Walker, Peter Drury and skip Malcolm Nelmes winning 22-10. The B team drew 45-45 at Headcorn – Peter Hogarth, John Link and skip Carol James won 18-13.

Tenterden earned a 10-point maximum with an 86-59 Mermaid League win at Hamstreet.

Ann Walker, Tony Masters and Kevin Pope won 30-12.
