‘Give villages breathing space’
Rural residents have urged Ashford Borough Council (ABC) to give them “breathing space” from development.
At a meeting last week, the ABC cabinet agreed to publish proposed revisions and additional policies for the borough’s Local Plan, marking the start of a second public consultation. The revised draft local plan will allocate sites for housing, offices, retail space and infrastructure.
The cabinet heard statements from speakers on behalf of Shadoxhurst, Orlestone, Aldington and Bonnington, Brabourne, Charing and Brook parish councils, who were concerned about the development plans.
David Ledger on behalf of Shadoxhurst said: “We need ABC to listen to local residents.”
Sheila Garrard, representing Aldington and Bonnington, said: “It’s time you give us breathing space from Ashford’s development.” Speakers raised fears about pressure on utilities and infrastructure, including country roads, shops and primary schools. Technology issues were also mentioned, with some villages noting limited wi-fi, mobile and freeview signals.
Speaking for Boughton Aluph and Eastwell, Cllr Winston Michael said: “The beautiful landscape so close to the town centre is what makes Ashford stand out from anything else.”
Cllr Paul Clokie, portfolio holder for planning and development, said: “Difficult choices have to be made to provide the growth needed.”
The draft was originally published in June last year but new government changes have meant an extra 1,250 homes must be allocated. Council leader Cllr Gerry Clarkson encouraged speakers to submit their views for the consultation. He said: “We are facing a situation where development is needed. The government has made that clear and we want to work with you.”
Around 50 members of the public were at the meeting. ABC concluded by agreeing to extend the consultation period until the end of August.
