Kentish Express Ashford & District
Will we see more money available for vulnerable?
It will be interesting, won’t it, to see if our councils follows the lead set by Mrs May. As a matter of political expediency, she seems to be declaring a softening of her policy of penalising the poor and disadvantaged.
Will we now find that there may be a few more shillings available to social services?
Did you hear, on television, that a Kensington councillor confessed (in reference to the terrible towerblock fire) that their council had been more concerned with cosmetic considerations than the safety of residents?
Mrs B and I were enjoying a week’s holiday in Cyprus on election day (we had earlier submitted our postal votes).
The weather there was pleasantly warm, tending toward hot. Surprising, then, to find Ashford hotter to the point where Mrs B has been taking shelter from the sun.
Sadly, we have noticed that the sensible use of sunshades on prams and pushchairs has dwindled almost completely away.
Many mothers now seem to consider that just pulling the hood forward affords adequate protection from the sun’s rays.
This is potentially dangerous. What this does in reality is to prevent the free flow of air and keep the infant in the hottest part of the vehicle leading to a serious risk of overheating.
I’m surprised that, with all the warnings about the heat being dangerous to old people and young children, this is overlooked.
We have five strawberry plants and they are working hard to supply us with some fruit.
Clearly, five are not enough, a fact that was made clear to us when a son-in-law turned up to give us two plastic containers filled with the produce from his garden.
He tells us that this year’s weather has been ideal for strawberries.
And then we go to supermarkets and find high-priced and relatively flavourless fruit which has been brought here from Spain and who knows where else.
This being the salad season, I recently bought some spring onions which had been shipped in from Israel.
This sort of thing is a clear argument for a spot of intense home-horticulture.
