Cyclists’ uphill task lands charity £7k

- By Molly Mileham-Chappell

A group of cyclists have completed the tough challenge of riding from Land’s End to Margate to raise cash for Pilgrims Hospices.

The group of 10 friends from Ashford took part in the challenge earlier this month.

So far, they have managed to raise around £7,000 but the total is continuing to rise.

The f our- day c hall e nge involved the team travelling more than 430 miles and climbing about 23,000ft.

One of the riders, Sean Calnan, said: “We left Land’s End and battled the hills of Cornwall and Devon for the first two days, completing 173 gruelling miles, and climbed a total of 12,000 ft which is more than the Three Peaks challenge.

“There was a bit of a crash in the New Forest involving two of our ladies and one had to sit out the rest of the day.Thankfully we had an excellent support team that came to the rescue.

“We pressed on to the Ashford hospice and made good time and onto the Margate hospice and the end of our adventure.

“We had a couple of small mechanical issues and obviously the crash, but other than that the whole thing went really smoothly, which considering none of us had ever done or planned anything like this before was amazing.

“We met some really interesting people along the way and had sponsorship given to us by the most unlikely of people, which made it all the more special.”
