Charities’ tribute to tireless support

Charities across Kent supported by Countess Mountbatte­n have paid tribute since her death last week.

Ashford and Tenterden Samaritans said the countess had been the patron of the branch since its inception 45 years ago, when she opened the premises and took the first call. She last visited the branch in 2012 for the branch’s 40th anniversar­y. Janet Lally, director of the branch, said on behalf of the trustees and volunteers: “She was an inspiring individual and we were very proud of having her as our patron. She will be greatly missed and we offer our condolence­s to the family.”

An NSPCC spokesman said: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Countess Mountbatte­n who was a long-time supporter, former trustee and deputy chairman of the NSPCC. She tirelessly
