Rail’s National Club hopes come to an end

Ashford Rail are out of the National Club Two Fours after a 36-23 defeat to Sandwich on Sunday.

One rink lost by one shot and the other by 12.

Rail played six mixed triples at Milton Regis on Saturday and won 100-92. The club’s highest-winning rink saw lead Debbie Anderson, Callum Fraser and skip Keith Smith triumph 25-7.

That followed six mixed triples at home to Lyminge on Tuesday.

Rail won five out of six rinks and 113-84 overall with lead Chrissy Tamburro, Clive Allen and skip Garry Breeds (27-8) the highest-winning rink.

Charing hosted Civil Service on Saturday and won a close match 82-67. The highest-winning rink, by 28-10, was Paul Rich, Val Prior and Martyn Morgan.

In county competitio­ns, Martyn Morgan reached the fifth round of the badged singles competitio­n with a 21-7 win over Herne Bay’s Joe Kelly.

Morgan and Keith Rich beat Gordon Samson and Terry Sykes, of Ashford Rail, in the pairs and fours competitio­n, while Morgan, Keith Rich, Matthew Rich and Paul Rich won at Faversham to earn a home draw against a team from Herne Bay.

Morgan also won his unbadged singles tie against Peter Boeg from Whitstable.

Charing welcomed Boughton for a friendly on Tuesday but were outbowled by the visitors 95-76.

Hamstreet lost on all rinks in their Mermaid League matches against Tenterden and Staplecros­s.

They gained two points from a match against Northiam with the rink of Roger More, Robin Collick and Ella More winning 32-9.

Hamstreet also lost 75-58 to Guestling in a friendly although the rink skipped by Dick Baldwin, with David Duke and Gwen Colley, won 20-9.

The return match against Staplecros­s saw Hamstreet lose on all rinks.

Tenterden won 47-38 at home to Bearsted in the Weald League.

The winning rink of John James, Ken Chapman and Andrea Crosser triumphed 23-6.

On Wednesday, Tenterden lost 70-45 in a friendly at Paddock Wood.

Their winning rink in this game, 15-13, was Peter Hogarth, Ann Walker and skip Mark Nelmes.

In another friendly, at home to Biddenden on Saturday, Tenterden lost 73-63. Their winning rink of 21-14 was Robin Powell, Tony Masters and skip Judith Pickford.

Kent beat Berkshire 130-92 at Sutton BC, Reading, in the second game of Middleton Cup qualificat­ion.

The result gave Kent an 18-point haul to Berkshire’s four points.

Former England internatio­nal Gordon Charlton (Sandwich) led the way with a rink score of 33-8.

There was another good result from the rink of Ken Weyand (St Lawrence) who recovered from a 10-shot deficit to win 29-15.

With Sussex having 39 points from three games and Kent 34 points from two, Saturday’s showdown at Marden takes on added importance as the sides battle for a place in the quarter finals.
