Village pond is brought back to life
Villagers celebrated several months of volunteering to restore their historic pond. Michael Hinchcliffe and others have worked to give the pond, off Church Road in Smeeth a new lease of life, putting in new railings, cutting back foliage and clearing the footpaths. He said: “We have a hardcore group of six volunteers, but sometimes as many as 10 people have helped. “Last summer we cleared out all of the rubbish from the water on both sides of the road. The pond has been here for centuries, but it had started to look spoiled. We have given up Saturdays over the last two to three months to refurbish it.”
