Lederhosen ready for festival of beer

- By Aidan Barlow

Das ist wunderbar! Residents can enjoy a taste of Germany when the town’s biggest Bavarian festival arrives in town next month.

The German Bierfest Ashford will be setting up in North Park in Tannery Lane, with a 1,200 seat capacity beer garden, an open air German village and an exclusive DJ.

The family-friendly festival, known as a sommerfest, will also see a selection of souvenir huts selling gifts, exotic drinks like sekt, and food such as bratwurst from Thursday, August 10, to Saturday, August 12.

Event manager Marvin Kluge said: “We are setting up the 1,200 seater beer garden as part of an open air festival.

“We call it sommerfest in Germany as we celebrate the spirit of summer and, typically, we do this with beer.

“German Bierfest Ashford is about much more than just beer. It is a celebration of life and an appreciation of culture.

“All staff will be dressed in spe- cial Bavarian costume, Lederhosen for gentleman and Dirndl for ladies.”

Beers will be served in giant two-pint glasses called steins and a highlight of the night will be the 300 capacity beer tent with guests sitting on traditional long benches.

There will be a children’s area where they can enjoy activities such as Hau den Lukas and other German games, while souvenirs will include Tyrolean hats, sweet gingerbread and other gifts.

Entrance to the open air areas is free but table booking is needed to enter the Bier Tent.
