Swaffers frustrated

The Swaffer racing team have lodged a protest against title rival Will Davison after an incident in the latest round of the Toyo Tires BMW Production Series at Brands Hatch on Sunday.

Davison (492 points) won both races to stay eight points clear of defending champion Matt Swaffer (486), following two close finishes on the Indy circuit at the Fawkham circuit.

However, the Swaffer team claim that Davison disregarded a yellow flag warning, banning overtaking, following a first race incident which left a car in the gravel at Clearways.

Swaffer was held up by that and another backmarker, with Davison getting in front to win.

An accident left oil and fuel on the track and following the clear-up operation, there was just three and a half minutes of racing time at the end.

Davison was able to get a jump on Swaffer, to eventually win by half a car’s length. Sponsor Brian Davis, of Chilham-based Autoquip, was there to witness an eventful afternoon.

Swaffer’s father and race engineer Roger said: “I have looked at the regulations and think we have got a good case.

“The committee are gathering all the information but it could be next week before we hear the outcome.”

He added: “We got pace off the car back to where we wanted it but had a problem with the fuel lines and spent all day on Friday putting it right. We then qualified on pole for both races by point three of a second.”

Four races are left in the season – at Donington Park on September 17 and Snetterton on October 15.
