Freddie’s excellent weekend

Young equestrian rider Freddie Jefferson-Pillai produced an outstanding performance in the Land Rover Regional Pony Club Grassroots Eventing Championships in Bedford over the weekend. The 13-year-old from Woodchurch and his mount Baby Cakes enjoyed a rewarding day at the College Equestrian Centre, Keysoe, finishing fourth in the event which comprised dressage, showjumping and crosscountry. The partnership rode impressive clear rounds in both show-jumping and crosscountry and picked up a score of 32 in the dressage – no mean feat given the pair have been together less than a year. Freddie, who attends Ashford School, said: “It was brilliant. I loved every moment but I was probably most nervous about the dressage phase as I was the first competitor to ride. “I knew we had ridden a good test but you never know how the other competitors are doing so you just have to do your best and hope you’ve done enough. “Luckily for me, Maisie (as Baby Cakes is affectionately known at home) was foot perfect all day and gave me a great ride.” Freddie and Baby Cakes – who stands 14.1 hands high – have built up a great partnership in their year together and compete for Ashford Valley Pony Club where Freddie has been a member since the age of six. He regularly competes for his club in other equestrian disciplines along with sisters Olivia (15) and Ruby (10). Older brother Zak (17) does not ride competitively but is also never far away supporting. The finals at Keysoe attracted 160 competitors, representing four different areas and the standard was consistently high with all the riders having had to progress from qualifiers. Freddie came through the Area 11 pony club One Day Event at Bonfleur near Maidstone in June.
