Strikers find their goal touch

-

Ashford found their shooting boots at the perfect time on Saturday.

They went into a game against fellow struglers Guernsey having scored just three times in seven Bostik South outings.

But that tally was doubled on a satisfying afternoon for manager Jason Whitmore and his players.

He said: “It’s a massive win and what we deserved. In the second half especially, we dominated the game and it could have been five or six.

“On Thursday, at the end of training, we took the strikers away to work on shooting.

“We’ve been a bit shot-shy, taking too many touches and not being confident enough to get the ball out of our feet and strike the ball.

“They’re talented young lads ASHFORD GUERNSEY but for some reason, they’ve not been pulling the trigger.

“We worked on that on Thursday and before the game kicked off we had another go so they were feeling ready for when they did have opportunities.”

Ashford were indebted to goalkeeper George Kamurasi for keeping the scoresheet blank in the first half.

He twice denied Matt Loaring while United debutant Isaac Boateng forced a save from Callum Stanton at the other end.

But two minutes into the second half, Ashford took the lead when Tyrell RichardsonBrown let fly from the edge of the box.Matt Day scored an even better goal two minutes later and that strike effectively killed the game.

Boateng and RichardsonBrown both went close before George Humber beat the offside trap and ran through to score his first goal for Ashford.

Whitmore said: “We know we need to get stronger at the back because we let schoolboy balls over the top and people get in behind, which shouldn’t happen at this level.

“We’ve been working on that for the last three-and-a-half weeks to bring some players in and when we add them to the team, the frailties we have at the back will be gone.”

Kamurasi, Eldridge, Sharp, Difford, Bingham, Kingwell, M Phillips (Botterill 56mins), Davisson, Boateng (Westney 86mins), Day (Humber 60mins), RichardsonBrown. Subs not used: A Phillips, Williams.
