Parking permit plan upsets residents

- By Kristina Curtis

A parking permit scheme implemented by Ashford Borough Council has annoyed many residents who feel there is no need for it.

The council has employed UK Car Park Management to regulate problems with parking in council-owned car parks and bays.

Households were given one permit each, as well as being able to send off for a visitor’s permit.

However, many residents are not happy with the new scheme – which was introduced without public consultation – as they feel it is not necessary.

Gill Selling’s mother has lived in sheltered accommodation at Askes Court, Singleton, for more than 10 years where parking permits have now been introduced.

She said: “Parking has never been a problem here before. I’ve always managed to find a space, but even if you don’t you can always park further up.

“No one from the council thought it worthwhile to speak to their elderly tenants, they didn’t make anyone aware. There was no consultation and it’s like the elderly don’t matter, they don’t have a voice.”

She added: “The residents are concerned because they rely on people visiting them so they are worried that people won’t anymore because of the permits.

“They have so many services such as doctors, nurses, food providers and social services as well as family members and friends. It’s not sustainable or practical for us all to share a permit.

“Does this mean doctors or nurses will receive a fine every time they visit a resident? What happens in an emergency?

“It’s awful, the residents are really worried now – they should have been spoken to first.”

A council spokesman said: “We would like to remind residents that we are trialling the parking permit scheme on a 30-day rolling contract.

“During this time the council is happy to speak to anyone who may have queries or concerns about their new permits and additional permits can easily be obtained for visitors such as doctors, nurses and carers.

“Residents can receive a consultation upon request – call the council’s neighbourhood services manager on 01233 330464.”
