Police station could be demolished and rebuilt
The future of Ashford police station is still in doubt – amid rumours the crumbling structure will be knocked down and rebuilt.
Force chiefs say they are yet to make a “long-term” decision about the Tufton Street building, which was built in 1968 and is surrounded by scaffolding.
Police and crime commissioner Matthew Scott will decide on the future of the station, but he is waiting on senior officers to submit a proposal for him to consider.
Ashford Borough Council leader Gerry Clarkson says the authority is monitoring the situation.
He said: “We are always concerned if buildings are scruffy, untidy or in a state of disrepair. We are very set on ensuring our town is attractive, but we must be patient with the police station.
“It does stand out and it is not attractive at the moment, but we will be keeping a keen eye on it.”
In 2015, a report highlighted concerns about lumps of concrete from the exterior cladding falling from the building, and chartered surveyors were brought in to assess its safety.
Rumours suggest the preferred option is to completely rebuild the six-storey block.
Rob Phillips, chief finance officer for the commissioner, said: “It is up to the police and crime commissioner to ultimately decide the future of Ashford police station. We have a duty to the public to make sure all buildings are cost-effective and represent value for money. The commissioner has asked the force to come forward with a proposal, consulting with an extensive range of stakeholders, before a decision is taken in due course.
“Our estate plays a key role in delivering effective and efficient policing for the people of Kent and all decisions are made on the basis of community need, use, operational effectiveness and efficiency, and opportunities to share accommodation with partner agencies.
“The commissioner has made it clear that retaining a policing facility in Ashford is a ‘red line’ and he will only agree to a plan which does not result in a diminution of service to the public.”
Police spokesman Amanda Wills said officers are still considering the station’s future.
She said: “The Chief Constable and chief officers have yet to make a decision on the force’s proposals for the long-term future of the building. The ultimate decision will rest with the police and crime commissioner.”
