12 balls had cost just 11 runs. Parnell advanced his own tally from 59 to 95 and in the process overhauled skipper Callum James, who watched from the other end unbeaten on 79. The 37-year-old said: “After the first couple of shots people started saying they’d never seen six sixes and after the third and fourth balls, I just thought I might as well go for it. “I felt a bit guilty because the boys were winding up our skipper saying he was on 97 (rather than 79) so when I hit the fifth one he said ‘You’d better make sure you do it now.’ The last one only just cleared the fence.”

Pennock left Gillingham by mutual consent in late September, ending his short reign as manager. Pennock won only one of his first nine league games in charge this season – 1-0 at home to Charlton – and departed with the Gills sitting 22nd in League 1. Pennock (pictured below) was a popular figure as a player, captaining the Gills to play-off glory at Wembley but had few highlights as manager. He left the Priestfield hot-seat with a record of six wins from 32 games in charge. Peter Taylor was placed in temporary charge of the Gills.

vice-chairman Michael Anderson left the club after he was charged with defrauding the US military health care system of nearly six million dollars. Mr Anderson, who ran a Florida-based drugs company, was indicted by a grand jury and, if found guilty, could face up to 60 years in an American jail and money he has invested in the club could be reclaimed. A statement released by the club revealed Mr Anderson had agreed to step down as vice-chairman with immediate effect “until the matter is resolved.” According to the club’s latest accounts, Mr Anderson is personally owed more than £400,000 he has invested in Gillingham.
