Acoustic Strawbs feature legendary frontman Dave
A music legend is heading to Ashford next month.
Dave Cousins, who found fame as the songwriter, front man and lead singer with the Strawbs will be appearing at Revelation in St Mary’s Church on Saturday, February 17.
He will be appearing with the Acoustic Strawbs.
Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper were the co-founders of the Strawberry Hill Boys, playing together first as the short-lived Gin Bottle Four.
The Strawbs emerged from these bluegrass roots in late 1967/early 1968.
Renowned in the mid-60s as the fastest UK banjo-picker around, as his own haunting compositions began to displace the bluegrass/traditional material, Dave developed a well-respected guitar playing style with unusual guitar tunings.
He was undoubtedly the heart and soul of the Strawbs and has led the band throughout its many changes, from early days through folk-rock with a progressive flavour to the fully fledged rock band they are today.
His complex epic songs are the cornerstone of the Strawbs’ appeal, delivered in his unmistakable vocal style, accompanied by his characteristic 12 or six-string acoustic guitar over a rock backing.
His compositions form the vast bulk of the band’s output, many of them drawing on his own direct experiences. The gig runs from 7.45pm to 10.30pm (doors open at 7pm) and tickets are priced £22 (£26 on the door). The price for under-16s, who must be accompanied by an adult, is £16 (£18 on the door).
The night will launch the venue’s new programme for 2018.
Kent’s Abigail Cardwell and Chris Kennedy will perform popular jazz standards new and classic on Sunday, February 25.
Then legendary fiddler Peter Knight (ex-Steeleye Span) and melodeon extraordinaire John Spiers (ex-Bellowhead) appear as part of their first UK tour on Saturday, March 3.
BRIT nominee singersongwriter Tom McRae performs alongside his regular touring musicians the Marching Band on Friday, March 9.
The Jonny Hepbir Duo will perform a vibrant mix of Gypsy swing, cool jazz and funky Latin on Sunday, April 22.
