ASHFORD TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE: DIVISION 4 ROUND-UP

-

Hamstreet B are holding top spot in Division 4, with Challock E within touching distance.

Both sides have made an unblemished start to the season, and it is hard to see where the challenge will come from based on results so far. Hamstreet opened with 7-3 and 6-4 wins against Ashford D and Sportsmen C respectively. In their latest match, the trio of Andrew Millbank, Tim Woodhouse and debutant Darren Holliday defeated junior side Ashford TT E, comprising Jack Westbrook, Harvey Horsley and Arthur Ellison Burroughs, by a 10-0 margin.

The only other match in Division 4 saw Ashford TT D taking on Ashford TT C in a battle for club bragging rights. The result came down to the fifth leg of the doubles, with Ashford TT D just ahead 5-4 following the singles. Level at 2-2, Glen Walters and Dennis Brindley won the final leg against C’s Spencer Hewins and Elliott Heal to give Ashford TT D a 6-4 win.

Ashford TT C had started brightly with Michael Radford and Hewins defeating Brindley and Keith Young 3-0.

Walters then put the D side on the board with a 3-0 win over Heal.

Radford defeated Young to put Ashford C 3-1 ahead in the match, but their opponents then won three on the bounce with Brindley edging past Heal, Walters defeating Spencer, and Young seeing off Heal.

Ashford C’s Radford then defeated Walters before

Ashford C’s Brindley beat Hewins for a 5-4 overall lead. Challock E had a week off after winning their opening encounters 8-2 over Ashford TT E, and 7-3 over Sportsmen C. Sportsmen C were the other side not in action, but having played three and lost three they will be looking for a change in fortune against Ashford TT E. For anybody looking to get into the sport, Ashford Vineyard are running a club on a Tuesday evening at their Cobbs Wood Estate venue, more details can be found on their website, while from March 7 at 8pm Repton Connect will be offering come-along-and-try sessions. Details of these evenings will shortly be available on the league website at www. tabletennis365.com/Ashford.
