Big win sends out a message

-

Ashford men’s 1sts made an emphatic statement to their rivals in Kent/Sussex Regional 2.

The league leaders hit seven goals in the second half at BBHC to emerge 9-0 winners.

By half-time Ashford had just a two-goal cushion. The game was a stalemate until Kiagh Bridges came off the bench and with his first involvement, played the ball through two defenders for Simon Cowling to set up the opener.

A second goal came before halftime, Allan Dawson finished at the back post after Sam Handley intercepted and crossed well.

Within five minutes of the second half, the lead was 3-0, Handley finishing from the top of the D after Bridges intercepted a pass.

The goals just kept coming, Handley scored another before Andy Hill got in on the action and finished twice.

Ashford finally converted their sixth penalty corner, Dawson getting his second with a great finish from the air, making it 7-0.

The final two goals were scored by Rob Playford and Robin Miller.

Mid-table Ashford 2nds lost out 4-3 to Canterbury 3rds in Kent Area Division 1.

Ashford 3rds were beaten 2-0 by K Sports in Kent Open Premier A, while the 4ths defeated Marden 3rds in Premier C.

In Kent Division 2, leaders Ashford ladies’ 2nds extended their advantage over nearest rivals – the club’s 3rds – to 15 points following a 6-0 win over Tunbridge Wells 3rds.

Ashford ladies’ 3rds, in second place, had to settle for 2-2 draw against Canterbury 3A.

Ashford used the width of the pitch well and with a strong run on the right, Tess Palmer delivered a cross for Linda Riddle to sweep the ball into the net.

Canterbury pulled a goal back from a quick break and in the closing minutes found an equaliser from a short corner.

Ashford ladies’ 4ths maintained their three-point gap over secondplaced K Sports 2nds – who they play on Saturday – with a 4-0 win against New Beccehamian 3rds in Kent Division 5.

The leaders were kept at bay in a goalless first half.

Despite a half-time team talk, Ashford were unable to convert their short corners as the second half got under way, with the closest strike coming from Karen Skelton. The visitors changed their tactics with Chloe Digby taking the corners. This confused New Beccs, not knowing who the push-out was going to.

A superb hard strike from Digby put Ashford ahead and the same player doubled the lead. Keeper Debs Gurr kept the visitors’ two-goal cushion intact with some saved great dives and Nina Dhindsa gained another corner for Ashford from which Digby secured her hat-trick.
