Kentish Express Ashford & District

Traffic concerns should have been raised long ago

Whatisitwiththese people? When I was a kid, we had our harmless kids’ gangs with our little secrets which gave us the feeling of being one up on the other kids. As we grow up, however the only secrets most of us have are the nice surprises we have for our loved ones – ‘not to be opened before Christmas’, etc... We accept that, as a nation, there are secrets to be kept – I and many others having at one time or another signed the Official Secrets Act but, come on, our local lot hold a vote of no confidence in the boss and the only thing they tell us is that Gerry Clarkson survived it.

It’s a kind of ‘yah boo’ attitude which does nothing to build confidence. Could it be that, with our local elections coming up, information on the reason for the vote, who proposed it, who supported and who voted against it might influence the way we choose some of our next representatives?

But enough of that – it probably doesn’t matter anyway.

There is hope yet that the Large Burton housing estate might not come to fruition. Kent County Council have stepped in with the kind of objection they should have made against other depredations – Chilmington Green for one. At last, they are admitting that our local roads are not up to the job of keeping the traffic flowing. In this instance, the William Harvey roundabout would be adversely affected – but what are a few emergency journeys to the hospital when set against the chance of a few million quid?

‘It’s a ‘yah boo’ attitude which does nothing to build confidence.’

As if it weren’t insult enough to the people of Ashford in general, and to their employees in particular, I’m told that M&S bosses have still not sorted out jobs for the wonderful staff they’ll be displacing when the County Square store finally closes. This, of course, is just another example of money apparently having more importance than people.
