Britpop band The Lightning Seeds will headline a free music festival in Ashford this summer.

The group - most famous for football anthem ‘Three Lions’ will be the top act at this year’s Create Music Festival in Victoria Park in July.

The England song became a number one hit on three separate occasions, including during last year’s World Cup.

The group has starred at some of the UK’s biggest festivals, including a stint on Glastonbury’s legendary Pyramid Stage in 2010.

They will now perform at the Create Festival on Saturday, July 20.

Originally emerging from the post punk Liverpool music scene of the late 1970s, frontman Ian Broudie has gone on to become one of the UK music industry’s most respected and influential songwriters and producers.

Broudie has helped to establish several mainstream UK bands including Echo & the Bunnymen, The Zutons and The Coral – as well as working with other wellknown artists including Terry Hall, frontman of The Specials, who will also be performing a DJ set in Ashford this year as part of Create Platform.

The group last performed in Ashford in 2012, at Revelation St Mary’s Church.

Create Festival organiser Chris Dixon said: “With a ton of hits under their belt, we know The Lightning Seeds will draw a big crowd of all ages, as well as attract more local acts to apply to play.

“Broudie’s passion for music and dedication to growing the talents of other musicians reflects the true ethos of Create, which is all about supporting new local talent and providing a platform for them to develop”.

This year marks the 24th year of the free music festival, which has grown significantly over the last five years.

Last year’s festival was the biggest to date, drawing more than 12,000 revellers with headline act DJ Jazzy Jeff who was made famous in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
