Such wonderful little characters

Children across the district dressed up as a character from their favourite book to celebrate a national reading initiative.

World Book Day – which entered its 22nd year last week – took place across the country on Thursday.

Children at Kingsnorth and Brook Primary Schools celebrated the event a day later on Friday.

In Kingsnorth, pupils wore sandwich boards decorated with their favourite book covers and brought in photographs of them reading.

They spent the day writing book reviews and sharing their stories, while teachers judged the costumes with the winners announced in a special assembly.

English leader Tasmin Mobbs said: “There were great photos of children sharing their love of reading, including photos with parents, grandparents… and even a dinosaur!

“Our school has won the summer reading challenge three years in a row and their love of reading has continued to grow.

“Everyone had a fantastic day celebrating books and reading and they are already looking forward to World Book Day 2020.”

At Brook Community Primary School, children celebrated the day by learning about a variety of authors and reading new books.

Head teacher Chris Green said: “Reading is an integral part of our school and we have recently refurbished our library and invested in our stock of high-quality books for all children. It was fantastic to see the children’s enthusiasm for and engagement in reading reflected in the range of costumes they wore.”
