United’s injury dilemma

MAY CALF PROBLEM COULD PROMPT TRANSFER ACTIVITY

- By Steve Tervet

Ashford are waiting on news of Jay May’s injury which could impact their next move in the transfer market.

Manager Tommy Warrilow will sign a striker if May’s calf problem will keep him out longterm.

But if the target man is able to get back soon, Warrilow may go with what he’s got.

He said: “Jay felt his calf so we gave him a few minutes to see how it was but we didn’t want him to pull it so he came off.

“I’m ng re or now. I’ve got a left-back and a utility player coming down for talks because numbers are dwindling at the moment.

“Losing those two (May and Sam Hasler) on Saturday, it’s important we start bringing some players in. I have got a forward in mind but I’m just going to see how long Jay is.

“If it’s not as long as we thought, we’ll persevere because Trey Williams went on and was outstand ng or us on urd so he deserves to keep his shirt at the moment.”

Saturday’s 3-0 win against Ramsgate was the final game of Hasler’s month on loan from Folkestone Invicta.

Warrilow said: “Hasler took a whack, got it X-rayed and he’s out for three or four weeks. It’s a real shame because he was just getting going as well.

“I spoke to (Folkestone boss) Neil Cugley on Sunday morning because they’re going for the play-offs.

“We’d like to have asked him to stay for a rollover, on a game callback but it wasn’t to be and he’s going to be out for a little while.”

Stefan Cox has rejoined Ashford from Whyteleafe but Tom Carlse has signed for champions-elect Cray Wanderers.

Warrilow said: “Coxy only went over there for a little while and I don’t know what happened but I you want to come back?’ and he was more than happy to.

“With the transfer deadline coming up, it’s important to get players registered but at the moment, there are players going out.

“We lost Tom Carlse last week and Jay’s injured so it’s important we keep our ears and eyes open and make sure we can fill the void.”

Ashford host East Grinstead on Saturday, knowing they’ll be guaranteed a play-off spot if they win five of their last eight games.

Warrilow said: “We’ve still got all the big hitters to play. We’ve got Cray, Horsham, Haywards Heath, Hythe, VCD and Hastings.

“If we lose a game, I don’t want to go into meltdown but they’re all six-pointers.

“You have to wait because I’ve lost two players so that will change the following Saturday.

“There’s no reason we can’t carry on winning. That’s two on the spin so hopefully we’ll start a little run but we’re not going to get carried away with it.”
