Kentish Express Ashford & District
Are you ready to help like Ralph?
Where are the grottiest places in Kent for rubbish?
We need your help as part of our Clean Up Kent campaign to seek out areas which attract the most litter.
One of the consistently dirtiest roads in the county is the A249 linking Maidstone to the Isle of Sheppey. Most of the litter can be found near its junction with the M2 at Sittingbourne.
The lay-bys are awash with rubbish which appears to have been left behind by lorry drivers or thrown out of car windows.
The A28 at Chartham linking Ashford to Canterbury is another blot on the landscape with rubbish strewn across verges near the Wyvern Garden Centre and Volvo, Seat and MG car dealerships. The sides of the A2 and Thanet Way are also eyesores.
Fed-up businessman Ralph Noel from Dunkirk near Faversham has taken matters into his own hands by wearing a hi-vis jacket to do his own cleaning up. He has even put up signs asking people not to dump litter.
He said: “The verges are covered in rubbish. It’s sad. No one likes it, yet not much is done about it. I’d like others to join me. I’m not suggesting we do cleanups along the A2 as verges are hard to reach but we’ll get out to parishes and clean them up.”
