Appeal launched for new members at town’s chamber

Tenterden’s chamber of commerce is appealing for people to serve on its committee as numbers have dwindled to an all-time low.

Just four committee positions are filled at Tenterden & District Chamber of Commerce, which represents more than 200 businesses in the town and beyond.

Mike Bartlett is stepping down as secretary after five years and he wants to pass the baton on as the organisation seeks to re-invigorate itself.

He said: “About four years ago we had 12 committee members, but when I step down there will be four.

“The chamber has a lot to offer and members can take advantage of workshops like the one we’ve just had on the use of social media for businesses.

“We also arrange talks and trips out.

“We have been to the Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden and Biddenden Vineyards.”

The chamber provides Christmas trees and lights along shopfronts in Tenterden High Street and St Michaels and administers the Tenterden loyalty card that can be purchased for £1 and offers discounted shopping in the town.

Networking events are held on members’ premises with upcoming meetings scheduled to take place at the Old Dairy Brewery and The Vine.

Committee members would need to come to a monthly meeting in Tenterden, which is always held on a Wednesday at 5pm, allowing up to two hours for attendance, while around the same amount of time would need to be spent on their committee role.

The chamber’s chairman is Terry Thorpe and its treasurer Samantha Whiting, while Simon Robinson has a roving brief and Fay Primarolo is responsible for social media.

As well as the position of secretary, roles need to be fulfilled in networking and education, marketing, data protection, events organisation, charity fundraising and media liaison.
