With the cancellati­on of Ashford 1st XV’s RFU Senior Vase tie against Bromley on Saturday due to a heavy injury list, attention focused on the 2nds who have shown promise in their opening games.

They faced a stiff test in the shape of Thanet Wanderers 2nds but emerged 24-7 winners in the Kent Rural League Division 3 game.

In the he first half, a try by Ben AskeyBrown was converted by Steve Golden. The home side turned the screw in the second half, with tries from Tom Hinckes and Shane Redman, plus two conversion­s and a penalty kick from Golden extending the lead to 24-0.

A late consolatio­n score on the final whistle was some reward for an opposition that pushed Ashford from start to finish. Team manager George Collins said: “There is a good combinatio­n of experience and youth that combines well together.”

The 1st XV return to London 2 South East action with back to back away games against Old Dunstonian­s and Old Williamson­ians in the next two weeks.

Ashford 2nds are again playing at home, hosting Deal & Betteshang­er 2nds. Ashford 3rds, following their defeat at the hands of Cranbrook 2nds last Saturday, travel to play Tunbridge Juddians 3rds.

The under-13s registered their second win this season by two scores more than opponents Gravesend.

The under-14s put in their most impressive display so far this season, winning 54-5. Ashford Town Swimming Club were one of six clubs competing in round one of the National Arena League held at Dover Leisure Centre. The evening consisted of 50 events made up of individual and team races. Ashford finished fifth overall. Their squad is pictured above
