Hopes hit by defeat

-

Ashford United’s hopes of winning Group Seven of the Velocity Trophy were dealt a severe blow on Tuesday evening, as they lost 3-1 to Whitstable at The Belmont, writes Joe Harbert.

A brace from opposition striker Harry Stannard ultimately proved the difference between the two sides, and it means United’s destiny now remains out of their hands to qualify for the second phase of the competition.

The hosts opened their account for the night after 34 minutes – Stannard getting his first of the evening to give Whitstable a 1-0 half-time lead. But United striker David Smith, who came on for the injured Tashi-Jay Kwayie after just 20 minutes, equalised for the visitors from the penalty spot to get his 12th goal of the season shortly after the break. However, it took the home side just three minutes to edge back in front – Stannard getting his second, also from the penalty spot, straight on the hour.

Despite United manager Tommy Warrilow bringing on the likes of Jay May to help rescue a point for his side, Ashford conceded for the third time in four games in stoppage time, as Whitstable grabbed their third courtesy of Aaron Millbank.

The defeat means United need to beat Faversham in their final group match on November 19 to have any realistic chance of topping the group, as they are now level with Ramsgate on seven points from a game more.
