Mural of Kelly’s work will be blessed at school
Girl who died of cancer was talented artist
Artwork by a teenager who had a rare cancer will be blessed just before the second anniversary of her death.
A mural of Kelly Turner’s work has been replicated on a large wall space at her former school, St Edmund’s RC in Dover.
The ceremony takes place there between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday, November 5.
Kelly, of Dover, had an extremely rare teenage cancer called desmoplastic small round cell tumours (DSRCT).
Her last hope was to get specialist treatment in New York.
A total £1 million pounds was needed for that.
People in Dover and neighbouring towns rallied by constantly holding events almost weekly during the fundraising campaign in 2016/17.
Hundreds of thousands of pounds were raised and the cancer treatment clinic in New York agreed to operate, allowing for fundraising to continue for her follow up care.
Kelly’s family agreed she should wait for the treatment until she had completed her GCSEs, pf which she achieved 10 GCSE passes at St Edmund’s in summer 2017 while undergoing chemotherapy and other regular treatment.
But in November 2017 her condition worsened.
She died on November 6, 2017 before she could get the treatment. She was just 17.
Kelly was also a talented artist and at times her work was displayed in fundraising event for her cause.
Her parents, Martin and Linda, will attend the blessing.
Martin said: “As Kelly’s parents we are so very proud of her achievements, and miss her every day.”
Fundraising in her name continues through the Kelly Turner Foundation to help other youngsters with her condition.
Money is now going to the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, London, and so far £636,000 has been raised.
