LATE ANGUISH AS WARRILOW’S MEN CAUGHT OUT IN STOPPAGE TIME

-

“We knew how Whitehawk would set up and we stopped them from playing, but we’ve just not got the goals to show for our possession,” Warrilow added.

“Motty’s made no saves. The first two goals we conceded were both scrappy – we got caught napping and should be doing better, and obviously for the third one you can’t do anything about it with the deflection.”

He continued: “We were dominating and I thought we played some really good football, especially in the second half. If we play like that each week we’re going to win more games than we lose.” After a goalless first-half, it took the visitors just four minutes to open the scoring after the restart – striker Duane Ofori-Acheampong tapping into an empty net from close-range.

The lead for the Sussex side lasted for just seven minutes though, as United striker Jay May waited for the ball to drop, before unleashing a terrific drive past Whitehawk keeper James Broadbent from 25 yards.

Yet the away side were gifted their lead back again on 73 minutes.

The Nuts & Bolts failed to clear a long throw-in, and Whitehawk’s No.9 OforiAcheampong duly got his second of the game when he poked home inside the penalty area.

Despite United’s May also doubling his account for the afternoon when he nodded home his eighth goal of the campaign with 10 minutes to go, Ashford were ultimately left to rue missing a host of chances.

Opposition striker David Martin’s 95th-minute strike deflected past captain Sam Mott in what turned out to be the final kick of an absorbing match at Homelands.

The result left Ashford in sixth-place on Saturday following the afternoon’s action, two places and four points behind their Brightonbased opponents.
